Economic Nexus Threshold Runway Calculator

Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.

Estimates how close your sales into one state are to that state's economic nexus threshold and how many months of current sales it would take to cross, for remote sellers tracking exposure state by state.

Economic nexus rules mean a state can require you to collect its sales tax once your sales or transaction count into that state pass a threshold, with no office, warehouse, or employee there. The awkward part is that the threshold sneaks up on you. Sales into any one state are a small slice of your total, nobody is watching that slice month by month, and by the time someone notices, you crossed two quarters ago and owe tax you never collected.

This calculator takes the state's threshold, what you have sold into that state so far in the measurement period, and your current monthly pace, then works out how far along you are and how many months of sales it would take to cross. It checks the sales test and the transaction test separately and reports whichever you would hit first. It is straight-line arithmetic on your own numbers: it does not know your seasonality, and it does not know whether the state counts gross sales, taxable sales, or marketplace sales toward the figure, so enter the number the state actually measures.

How to use this tool

  1. Look up the state's economic nexus threshold and enter the sales figure and, if the state has one, the transaction count. Enter 0 for transactions if the state uses sales only.
  2. Enter your sales and transaction count into that state so far in the measurement period the state uses, then your average monthly figures for that state.
  3. Read the percent of each threshold reached and the months to crossing. If it is less than a quarter away, start the registration research now so you are ready on the day.

What the math assumes

  • Assumes your monthly sales and transaction counts stay flat at the figures you enter. Seasonal spikes bring the crossing forward.
  • Assumes the measurement period does not reset before you cross. If the state measures on a calendar year and the year ends first, the count starts over and the crossing moves out.
  • The default figures of $100,000 in sales and 200 transactions are placeholders that follow a common pattern; states set their own numbers and several have dropped the transaction test, so enter the current figures for the state you are checking.
  • Treats nexus as crossing on the earlier of the two tests, sales or transactions. A few states require both to be met; for those, use the later of the two dates.
  • Does not model what happens after you cross, such as the date collection must begin, which differs by state.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter gross sales or taxable sales into the state?

It depends on the state. Some count gross sales including exempt and resale transactions, others count only taxable retail sales. Check the state's definition and enter the figure it measures. If in doubt, run it both ways and plan for the earlier crossing.

Do marketplace sales count toward the threshold?

Often yes, even when the marketplace collects the tax for you, but not in every state. Include them unless the state explicitly excludes marketplace sales from its count.

What does 0 months until you cross mean?

You have already met at least one test based on the figures you entered, and the status line says which one. If the status reads no crossing at current pace, the 0 means the calculator cannot project a date because your monthly figures are zero.
